Camp Grey Dove - August 7 - 13, 2005
Camp for Siblings of Children with Cancer
Our camp counselors, counselors in training and
campers were very excited to pile into a big bus and
head out of town in route to Camp Grey Dove for
Siblings 2005 a “Safari Adventure” held from August
7th-August 13th at Peaceable Kingdom Retreat in
Killeen, TX. Founded by Deborah Sharp almost 15
years ago, Camp Grey Dove serves to address the
needs of siblings of children with cancer by providing
a time to have fun, laugh and relax as well as offering
much-needed support and therapy.
Childhood cancer impacts the parents, siblings and
extended family of the hundreds of children suffering
through transplants, chemotherapy and radiation.
Many siblings must “be strong” despite their
overwhelming fear, act as “caretaker” to younger
siblings despite their youth and “put on a happy face”
despite their feelings of guilt, isolation and sadness.
Camp Grey Dove gives these children a place to feel
safe to talk about their feelings, bond with other
children with whom they can relate and swim, play
and laugh, temporarily leaving behind the pressures
they are facing at home.
Just like any other camp, these kids go horseback
riding, fishing, swimming and rock climbing. In
addition, Peaceable Kingdom provides the opportunity
for campers to test their limits by climbing a 30 foot
tower and whizzing down a zip line. Then the
campers are whisked off to a red-carpeted premiere
of personally made films at the camp’s very own
theater designed by Cinemark. Last, but not least,
campers indulge in a night-time surprise ice cream
social at Peaceable Kingdom’s Putt-Putt golf course.
Furthermore, campers are encouraged to express
themselves through arts & crafts and communicate
their feelings with trained Any Baby Can social
workers in small group sessions.
Camp Grey Dove for Siblings hosted over 50 campers
this year. Along with counselors from Any Baby Can
staff and counselors-in-training, the kids took a
much-needed break spending time in nature and with
each other!
For more information on how you can sponsor a child
for next year’s Camp Grey Dove for Siblings call Judah
Crossland at Any Baby Can via phone #512-334-4452

Havana on the Lake
Imagine this: a cool breeze, beautiful lakeside view,
sangria in hand, and the sounds of salsa insisting that
you sway to the beat. In a corner, cigars are rolled
by Cuban masters. Upstairs, the excitement of table
games at the Tropicana Casino. This could be the
next stop on your South American vacation, or, even
better, your seat at Carlos ’n Charlie’s on Lake Travis.
Any Baby Can presents the 2005 Havana on
the Lake celebration October 1, 2005 with a goal to
raise $100,000 for Any Baby Can programs. Not only
is it a fantastic party on the lake with salsa dancing,
great drinks, and some amazing authentic Cuban
cuisine, but the silent and live auctions, casino and
raffle will help raise money for children in need. And
what could be better than that?

Employee Spotlight
with Christina Sanchez
For almost 2 years, Christina Sanchez has worked as
a case manager/social worker at Any Baby Can, but
her interest in social work started long before that.
Christina grew up in Washington, where she worked
as a volunteer with children and families through high
school. She went on to receive her Bachelor’s degree
in Sociology and Spanish at Willamette University in
Salem, Oregon. She credits a study abroad
experience working with child laborers in Ecuador as
the stepping stone in helping her decide to become a
social worker. It was at this time Christina realized
that she likes to listen to people, not only to hear
what each individual has to say, but also to hear the
different life stories of each person.

Rockin' Roundup - Tennis Tourney - Dennis Quaid
Rockin' Roundup
It is hard to describe just how great this event was.
The exquisite Cajun food, the elaborate decorations,
the exciting auctions, the raffle, Jeff Eliasoph, and all
of the bands proved to be just about perfect. A very
special thanks to Leslie Walters because this was
truly the smoothest Roundup yet. She put her heart
and soul into this adventure and her investment really
paid off! The Rockin' Roundup is the biggest
fundraiser for Any Baby Can held all year. Aside from
the publicity, the word of mouth value, the
enjoyment of all those involved with the event, we
raised a lot of money.
The money from the Rockin' Roundup is "unrestricted"
and can be used for things which are not funded by
other sources. Frankly, without the Rockin' Roundup,
we could not provide all the services that we do,
especially the ones that can't be quantified by
statistics or measurements. The Candlelighters
program for children with cancer falls into this
category and is greatly benefited by
these “unrestricted” funds. The PEP program also
serves to benefit from this event and is a program
which helps first time moms, many of whom are
teenagers, get the proper health and nutrition
guidance to give their babies a fresh positive start in
life.
Thank you to everyone who helped orchestrate this
event and a special thanks to those who attended.
Jeff Bailey Memorial Tennis Tournament
9th Annual Jeff Bailey Memorial Tennis Tournament
raises $30,000 thanks to AXA advisors and other
sponsors. This year’s 9th Annual Jeff Bailey Memorial
Tennis Tournament at the Courtyard Tennis Club was
held
Friday, May 6, 2005 benefiting Candlelighters, a
program of Any Baby Can. This year’s event is the
most successful in the tournaments history, raising
over $30,000.
Dennis Quaid
The 3rd Annual Dennis Quaid Charity Weekend was
held the weekend of June 16-19. The excitement
kicked off on Wednesday June 15, when Dennis
himself arrived at the ABC office for a visit with the
kids and staff. After greeting everyone at the front
door, Dennis headed to the Susan and Michael Dell
Room where he met with all of the children and their
excited parents. He seemed to be at great ease with
all of them and even took time to pose for pictures
with everyone.

Denise Little, Any Baby Can’s Community Outreach/

ABC in January 2005. Denise has such passion for
what she does and works from the bottom of her
heart. She is an inspiration. She teaches parenting
classes Tuesdays and Thursdays at ABC. The second
Saturday of each month she facilitates a class for
Child Care providers. Foster parents and parents are
also welcome, if they wish to attend.

ABC Board News
New and Retiring Boardmembers
Sometimes saying goodbye is hard; saying hello can
make it a bit easier. Any Baby Can experienced this
last month when we had say goodbye to some of our
board members; but at the same time, we welcomed
some new faces to our board room for the next year.
Here’s a quick update on our new board
members. Ann Howard is a former member of the
CEDEN board who was president at the time of its
merger with ABC. With a passion for disadvantaged
children and for ABC’s mission, Ann has a lot of
energy to devote to ABC. A lawyer by training, she
holds both a UT law degree and a MPA (Master of
Public Administration) from the LBJ School of Public
Affairs, but does not currently practice law. She is a
dynamic and energetic individual who will represent
ABC well in the community.
Diane Sandlin is a senior executive in the insurance
industry. She has been active in the Austin
community but would like to take a greater role in an
organization she feels passionate about. She is very
interested in nonprofits and completed the
Management of Nonprofit Organizations Certificate
program at UT in 2003. She also has a BA degree
from UT.

Pottie Mouth Pays Off!
In one of the most unusual fundraising activities,
Nancy Rhodus challenged herself to an important
task. She found that she said an unmentionable
word out of habit and wanted to break herself of that
habit. So, she vowed that every time she said that
word, she’d contribute $10 to Any Baby Can.
Fortunately for Any Baby Can, it took some time, but
last week she presented us with a check for $100
Maybe you can think of a challenge that will benefit
both you and Any Baby Can?

The Liberian Refugees
by Lisa Waller Rogers, ABC Volunteer
I'm fascinated with people - especially people who
come from faraway places - and teaching at Any
Baby Can gets me close to them. I want to know
these people. I want to hear their stories.
On four weekday mornings, the Family Literacy
classroom fills up with such fascinating people. Most
are Spanish speakers eager to learn English. So it
was a great surprise when the Liberians appeared at
the door - already speaking English.
There were seven of them, three women and their
four children - no men. Caritas had referred them for
instruction. The women - Oretha, Yamah, and
Catherine - wanted to learn how to read and write.
Yamah was twenty years old. She had only recieved
one year
of formal schooling.

Letter from our Director Ellen Balthazar
“Any Baby Can means any baby can be happy, healthy and have a good mommy.”
This simple but concise declaration of what we are
about is articulated by a client on our new Agency
video. Her profound observation crystallizes for me
the mission of this incredible organization. We go to
the corners of this community to insure that any
child. . . regardless of health condition, race,
ethnicity, family income or education level of the
parents. . . can reach his or her potential. The
balance of the new video, produced by our great
friend, Jim Canning and his associates at KXAN , does
a superb job telling how we go about insuring that
any baby can be happy, healthy and have a good
mommy:
