PEP program makes a difference in a young mother's life
I have a favorite mom that I worked with
in the Fall of 2001. She was a young mother who had
broken up with her boyfriend and headed off to the job
corps when she found out she was pregnant. She was not
very happy about it, but she determined to make the
best of it. After the baby was born, they found that
she had a hole in her heart that required surgery. This
was a devastating experience for a young woman, but
she faced it bravely. I was privileged to be with her
on the day of the surgery when the baby was only six
months old. No family was with her when I arrived early
that morning and she was tense. Just my presence there
meant a lot to her and I was so thankful to be able
to support her in such a small way. What joy we all
had when the doctor came out to say that everything
went great. The little girl is adorable and growing
healthy and strong. I recently attended the baby shower
for the next sibling on the way and hope to continue
to encourage this intelligent young woman to attend
college as a way to assure success for her two children.
