These are exciting times at Any Baby Can. We would like to introduce you
to our new Family member, Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of
Austin. Please read the feature article for the details and enjoy this
edition of the e-Cribsheet. Thanks for your support.
Candlelighters join ABC Family
Announcing the completed merger of the two organizations, Lila Carl
exclaimed, "It's a perfect fit!" The consolidated agency will keep the name
Any Baby Can. Candlelighters' services will remain intact as one of the key
programs within Any Baby Can.. The Candlelighters will appear as an
affiliate of ABC.
This merger eliminates most of the Candlelighters' overhead with the move
into the ABC offices on East 7th street, allows for more streamlined service
to clients cutting back on possible duplication of service, consolidates the
marketing and fundraising to more efficiently use community resources, all
while keeping the same services the Austin community desperately needs.

Holiday family adoption |
 |
We still need sponors for our families, so it's not too late to
join with friends of Any Baby Can to share in the spirit of giving
as sponsors in our annual Holiday Giving Program. In this program
individuals, families, corporations or groups "adopt a family".
They receive a list of potential gifts compiled by the family. This
list serves as a guide when sponsors purchase gifts for the families.
To learn how you can provide a brighter holiday for a family in
need, please call Molly Suess at 334-4452 or email mollys@abcaus.org.

LCRA goes "Back to School" |
 |
A big thank you to the wonderful people at LCRA who took time
out of their busy day to go school shopping for over 300 families
with children ranging in grades K- 5.
This is the second year that The LCRA Corporate Business Development
Team has helped out with this important project.
JoEllen Peterman, LCRA employee stated, "The LCRA Corporate
Business Development Team has a practice of doing a volunteer
activity as a team at least twice yearly. It is part team building
and part fun. The LCRA United Charities Fund provides the funding
for the supplies and we supply the elbow grease for shopping,
sorting and bagging. This gives us a chance to see how the LCRA
United Charities money is spent and provides us with a great opportunity
to work with each other on a fun, less stressful project than
we usually do."

Candlelighters Camp Grey Dove |
 |
Approximately 55 children ranging from age 7 to 18 enjoyed Camp
Gray Dove, where even the counselors are veteran campers coming
back to continue the legacy and their friendships. Activities ranged
from a challenge course, water-skiing, banana boating, arts and
crafts, and even more. There was also an exciting dance, a scavenger
hunt, and water Olympics to finish off the week with a bang.
Camp Grey Dove's special purpose is to give the siblings of Candlelighters'
children an outlet for their frustrations, emotions and also give
them a way to connect with others in understanding the many ways
cancer affects a family. Next year the leaders of Grey Dove hope
to improve camp by having more structure in camp time and activities.
With a great new location and the eagerness to raise funds for
next summer, Camp Grey Dove will prove to be a successful and
therapeutic place for campers and counselors alike.

Fall Event Highlights |
 |
Candlelighters Corporate Shootout Challenge - The Shootout Challenge
was held October 17, 2003 at Cypress Valley Preserve and was both
a great time and an incredible success raising over $30,000. The
event was lead by a world-class shooter himself, Dean Blain, Jayfield
Investments Corporation and Candlelighters board member, with help
from many friends. Around 20 teams competed in a 50-target, sporting
clays tournament with winner from each division earning a shotgun
or gift certificate from McBride's Guns.
IBM Uptown Classic - Any Baby Can was a beneficiary this year and was
awarded $10,000 from IBM. Thanks to IBM and all the ABC volunteers that
helped with the event.
Luau on the Lake - The first-annual Luau on the Lake held at Carlos'n
Charlie's on September 13, 2003 was a success raising over $50,000 for
Any Baby Can. The lakeside restaurant was transformed into an authentic
Hawaiian Island beach paradise. A very special thanks to Monica Pottorff,
chairman of the Luau, for her incredible vision to make this dream come
true, and to the hard-working committee.
The 12th annual Adopt-A-Doll luncheon and the first annual Harvest
Classic motorcycle rally in Luckenbach, Texas (organized by Russell
Duke, Candlelighters board member and several of his motorcycle friends)
were both a success.

Be a Star to a Child Campaign |
 |
Randalls and Any Baby Can have been working together for the past
several years on this campaign. Thanks to all the community members
that visited all Randalls locations, we raised almost $15,000 last
year. We hope to exceed this amount for our upcoming campaign.
This year, the campaign will take place between November 19 -
December 25, 2003. Visit Randalls and scan a silver ($5) or gold ($10)
star at the register, and the money goes to Any Baby Can. Proceeds from
the sale of Entertainment Passbooks, and a contribution from Coca- Cola
will also contribute to campaign.

Decrease your 2003 taxes |

Your year-end tax reports may be showing room for charitable
donations. Periodically used real estate, appreciated stock, unused life
insurance, and even cash can cost you a valuable penny when it comes
time to file your taxes. Any Baby Can has a solution that will not only
decrease your 2003 taxes, but will enable us to perform our daily
miracles of helping children in need. Through effective year-end tax
planning, there are several ways to give of yourself, or your company,
while lowering your annual taxes.

Letter from a Mom |
 |
To be honest, I don't remember how I got connected with a Prenatal
Educator Volunteer from Any Baby Can. I blocked a lot of things
from life at that time. What I do remember is a blonde haired lady
coming to my aunt's house. I remember that she seemed interested
in my feelings and my situation. She was not condescending. She
seemed sincere about helping me.
It felt good to know that someone cared enough to come and visit me.
After her visits I always wondered if she would actually come back. Each
time she returned I felt the reassurance that she really cared.
I am happily married and have a bigger family now. I work full time
and will be a part-time student at a local community college this fall.
I don't want to say that my life was picture perfect after having had a
Prenatal Educator Volunteer in my life. But I will say that because of
her I know that there are people in this world that do care.
