Shootout
Candlelighters Corporate Shootout Challenge
was held October 17, 2003 at Cypress Valley Preserve
and was both a great time and an incredible success
raising over $30,000. The event was lead by a world-class
shooter himself, Dean Blain, Jayfield Investments Corporation
and Candlelighters board member, with help from many
friends. Around 20 teams competed in a 50-target, sporting
clays tournament with winner from each division earning
a shotgun or gift certificate from McBride's Guns (www.mcbrides-guns.com).

Luau on the Lake The first-annual Luau on the Lake held at Carlos'n Charlie's
on September 13, 2003 was a success raising over $50,000
for Any Baby Can. The lakeside restaurant was transformed
into an authentic Hawaiian Island beach paradise and
will now begin transforming the lives of Austin children
with special needs through Any Baby Can services.
This money alone will allow the
following: at least 50 children with critical health
care needs to receive medical services that could make
the difference between life and death, counseling for
50 families to aid them in dealing with the emotional
and financial strain in having a developmentally delayed
or special needs child, 30 teen or first-time mothers
at risk for having premature or sick babies to receive
mentorship, education and support to ensure they have
healthy babies.
A very special thanks to Monica Pottorff,
chairman of the Luau, for her incredible vision to make
this dream come true, and to the hard-working committee.

12th Annual Adopt-A-Doll
Luncheon
The 12th annual Adopt-A-Doll luncheon
was an incredible success. Attendees were educated about
special needs and at-risk children in the Austin area
and encouraged by the Adopt-A-Doll awards and a speech
by this year’s Adopt-A-Doll’s mother, Tessa
Curtis.
"I want people to know how special organizations
like Any Baby Can are. When this happens to you, not
only are you bombarded with financial difficulties,
but it is emotionally and physically exhausting, and
not knowing where to go and what to do, it's wonderful
to have organizations to help you,” she said.
During the luncheon, 2003 Adopt-A-Dolls made in the
likeness of her three year old daughter, Katia Curtis,
an Any Baby Can child, were awarded to the following
businesses and individuals: Senator and Mrs. Bill Ratliff,
Clark Benefit Group, Inc., Pathways Health Services,
The Austin Retirement Specialists, Guaranty Insurance,
Bank One, Mark and Mary Tempelmeyer, HealthCare Facilities
Development, Protect America, Inc., Ellen Balthazar
(Eanes ISD board member and ABC board member), Stacy
Ratliff (April 17, 2004 Rockin' Roundup chair), Monica
Pottorff (Luau on the Lake chair), Kelli Brown (2004
Rockin' Roundup honoree and board member), former Austin
mayor Gus Garcia, former Texas State Representative
Wilhelmina Delco, and Bette Mayfield.
Jonathan Friedman, development director, reviewed the
successes of the past year and encouraged the attendees
to become more involved with ABC over the next year
by joining the Angel Society, a group of dedicated individuals
committed to watching over Any Baby Can.
